Bread of Life

Bread of Life

A quiet invitation to rediscover what truly nourishes us through the art of sourdough.

Perhaps you know the longing to feel truly nourished, beyond the meal itself.

Yeshua said he was the bread of life. A simple image. Everyone knows bread. Across generations, it has found its place at the table, shared among families.

Take a moment with those words. He meets us in something so ordinary, so simple, because this is where our lives already unfold: at the table, in the everyday, together.

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

- Luke 4:4

He speaks these words in the wilderness, in a time of temptation.

Not to diminish bread, but to remind us of something easily forgotten: there is a Father who gives us not only bread, but himself. Who wants not only to feed us, but to be close to us in every part of life. Not only in moments of prayer, but in the everyday.

You watch the little bubbles forming in your sourdough starter. Later, your hands return to the dough, kneading it with the tenderness of caring for a child. Preparing food can be an expression of love. And that love reaches beyond the table.

Baking bread can become a small rhythm of the heart. A familiar moment that reminds us to whom we belong.

Flour, water, time

Sourdough can be renewed again and again, yet it remains so simple. That is what we love about it. It is alive. Good flour, water and time are enough for life to begin unfolding. No recipe can hurry it into being. We make room for it to happen, time after time.

Microorganisms ferment the grain, changing its flavour and texture. This process can make bread easier to digest and improve the availability of certain minerals. Yet there is more here than chemistry. It is an invitation to:

  • notice what happens within our food
  • work with natural rhythms rather than hurry every process
  • rediscover knowledge passed down through generations
  • make our own bread from simple ingredients
  • witness something wonderful emerging from very little

A quiet abundance

This is an abundance freely given.
Not something we earn. Not something that asks us to know more. Not something we can achieve.

It is already here before we discover it, in the simple things we so often overlook.

The Father nurtures life. In a jar of sourdough starter, as in a family, a relationship or an idea slowly taking shape. He does not hurry us. He stays close and gives us what we need, often more quietly than we expect.

There is room for this quiet throughout our lives. In our work. In raising our children. In what we build and create. In the relationships that sustain us. All of it draws from the same source.

For you, today

You do not need to learn anything new today to be loved. But perhaps you can allow yourself a little more time. Mix a dough. Say a prayer. Or simply notice how much you have already been given. That is enough for today.
